"While studying abroad in Ireland last semester I took a whole new turn on my work. I stayed
in a small village in Ireland where I felt on one hand excited to be away from the big city while on
the other hand terrified at the thought of being so alone in a new country.
Trying to overcome culture shock I read things like Sigmund Freud’s ‘The psychoanalysis of
everyday life” where he talks about the little things in life being more interesting than anything else
and that is how this series came about.
I had become more interested in simple black and white photography and portraiture being
able to reveal primitive emotions. The character in the series ‘Defining Charlotte’ is portrayed
showing different sides of herself, which contradicts the clown like make‐up on her face (echoing
simple contradictions in life) and looks as if she is putting on a performance.
In the last couple photos however the viewer is forced to turn into a more voyeuristic role as you
find out that this person (Charlotte) is actually apart of some solo performance, which she is
obviously not happy to be a part of."
